Clarke leads Australia to win
Australia's stand-in skipper Michael Clarke led from the front as the hosts chased down a massive England score of 333 for six with wickets to spare in the sixth One-Day International on Wednesday. Australia now leads the seven match series 5-1.
At the Sydney Cricket Ground, England posted its highest total against Australia in ODIs.
But Shane Watson (51: 34 b, 8x4) gave a rollicking start to Australia. Australia surprised everyone by promoting Mitchell Johnson to number four position. Johnson struck a 59-ball 57 with two sixes and one boundary. He shared a 79 run third wicket stand with Callum Fergusin (46) as Australia kept up with the asking rate.
It was then down to Clarke (82: 70b, 4x4, 1x6) who in a 90-run stand with David Hussey brought Australia close to the target. In the end Brett Lee and John Hastings held their nerves to carry Australia home.
Earlier, Jonathan Trott hit a superb 137 to drive England to 333 for six, their highest tally against Australia. The 29-year-old, who hit 102 to help England to their only previous victory in the series, survived an lbw call courtesy of the television review when he was on 82 to pick up his third century in one-day internationals.
Australia already have an insurmountable 4-1 lead in the series and they laboured in the field in front of a sparse crowd on a sweltering day at Sydney Cricket Ground.
England started briskly and kept up the pace after Mitchell Johnson had bowled Marcus Prior off his pads for 18 to bring Trott in to bat.
Trott remained at the crease as his captain Andrew Strauss (63), Kevin Pietersen (29), Ian Bell (45) and Eoin Morgan (21) all made their contributions before he departed caught and bowled by Shaun Tait just before the 50 overs were up.
England's tally bettered the 320-8 they made against Australia at Edgbaston in 1980. The final match of the series takes place in Perth on Sunday.
