Yuvraj Singh named skipper of Pune Warriors


Ace Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh will be the captain of Sahara’s Pune Warriors, the latest entrants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) commencing from April 8.


Sahara India today announced the name of Yuvraj as the skipper beside naming a 30-member squad. Yuvraj was purchased by the team at a staggering amount of $ 1.8 million.

It was only yesterday that Gautam Gambhir, currently participating in the ICC World Cup along with Yuvraj, was made captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL franchisee co-owned by Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan.

Apart from Yuvraj, the Pune Warriors team includes Ashish Nehra, Robin Uthappa and Murali Karthik from amongst Indian players and Graeme Smith, Angelo Mathews, Tim Paine, Nathan McCullum, Callum Ferguson, Wayne Parnell, Mitchelle Marsh, Jesse Ryder, Jerome Taylor and Alfonso Thomas from abroad.

Other players are Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dheeraj Jadhav, Eklavya Dwivedi, Ganesh Gaikwad, Harpreet Singh, Harshad Khadiwale,Imtiyaz Ahmad, Kamran Khan, Manish Pandey, Mithun Minhas, Monish Mishra, Rahul Sharma, Sachin Rana, Shreekant Wagh and Shrikant Mundhe.

According to Abhijit Sarkar, Director of Sahara Adventure Sports Limited, "Sahara’s Pune Warriors squad has been constituted with an intention to strike a balance between experience, exuberance, international expertise and promising talent of present and future. Keeping in mind the 20:20 format of the game we are looking to play aggressive and entertaining cricket and are confident to make a permanent mark on the league."
