South Africa scores crushing win

South Africa did Group B rivals India, England and West Indies a big favour by securing all three teams a place in the Cricket World Cup quarter-finals after beating Bangladesh by 206 runs on Saturday.

Set an imposing 285 to win, the co-hosts were soon in trouble, losing their first four wickets for 21 and they eventually crumbled to 78 all out.

The result confirmed South Africa as Group B winners. The outcome of India's match against West Indies on Sunday will decide the positions of the other three qualifiers from the group.

Group leaders South Africa, already assured of their last eight spot, won the toss and elected to bat on a reliable surface at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and made a solid start through Hashim Amla (51) and Graeme Smith (45).

Jacques Kallis continued in the same controlled vein after their stand was broken on 98 and he made 69 off 76 balls before offering a sharp caught and bowled to skipper Shakib Al Hasan.

Faf du Plessis (52) kept the momentum going through the closing oversbefore hitting a Rubel Hossain full toss straight to Tamim Iqbal.

They finished on 284-8 from their 50 overs.

A victory for South Africa would eliminate the co-hosts but a Bangladesh win would leave England, West Indies and India all under threat of going out depending on Sunday's final decisive group match between India and West Indies in Chennai.
